Tasawer Khan) Mon, 15 Jul 2019 00:00:00 +0500 OJS 60 The efficacy of shading design in reducing heat gain in commercial buildings in the semi arid climate of Lahore; Focusing on the geometry of horizontal shade <p>Building envelope acts as a barrier between outside and inside environmental conditions. Window in the building envelope is an important area as it is least resistant to the outside environmental conditions. An optimal shading device can create a balance in this context. It is important in semi arid climates like that of Lahore. This paper focuses on the geometry of horizontal shade that is desirable in Lahore’s climate and its impact on heat gain and daylight level in commercial buildings. Significance of this study is the calculation of depth of horizontal shade that can have a significant impact on heat gain in the climate of Lahore. Simulation is conducted as a next step to evaluate the performance of designed horizontal shade on a window with 40% WWR and double low E bronze glass on east, south and west orientations. Results show the efficiency of horizontal shade is more on south orientation in climate of Lahore.</p> Memoona Rashid, Ayesha Malik, Saima Gulzar, Adnan Jalil ##submission.copyrightStatement## Sat, 17 Aug 2019 19:17:06 +0500 One Dimensional Non-Linear Ground Response Analysis-A Site Specific Case Study of Peshawar District, Pakistan <p>We present a one-dimensional non-linear ground response analysis conducted for a specific site at Peshawar District, Pakistan. The geotechnical properties and shear wave velocity from standard penetration test, confirmed the site as Sc according to the building code of Pakistan. The input ground motion used at the depth of bedrock are selected from strong motion database that are compatible to the seismic hazard of the site.&nbsp; The surface Fourier Amplification factor obtained from the ground response analysis showed amplification for all input motions near the site fundamental period. The higher amplification factor and spectral value is obtained in case of input motion that is stronger near the site fundamental period. The ground response analysis results show that, in case of same soil model, the variation of peak acceleration along the depth of soil profile depends on the acceleration response spectrum of input motion. The stronger the spectral acceleration value near the site fundamental period, the greater the amplification factor and thus higher peak ground acceleration is obtained. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> Khalid Mahmood, Qaiser Iqbal, Hassan Khan ##submission.copyrightStatement## Tue, 20 Aug 2019 16:07:42 +0500 Diabetic Retinopathy Detection using RGB Image Processing Techniques <p>In modern era diabetic eye disease comprises a group of eye conditions that affect people with diabetes, in which diabetic retinopathy (DR) has the potential to cause severe vision loss. This paper proposes a peculiar algorithm in MATLAB for automating the detection of DR using fundus image. Several morphological operations performed on fundus image to detect and extract the features like blood vessels, micro-aneurysms and exudates. Automatic detection of DR will determine to sort between normal or abnormal eye based on the features detection. As a result, an early detection of DR facilitates medication to prevent vision loss. Real-time image processing shows encouraging results in terms of validity and efficiency.</p> Majid Gulzar ##submission.copyrightStatement## Sat, 17 Aug 2019 19:22:00 +0500 Investigation of Enhancing Temper Resistance and Hot Hardness for Tool Steel <p>Hot strength, temper resistance and low thermal expansion are a few amongst many desirable properties to ensure longer life for dies and punches in AISI type H tool steels, during hot forging. A compromise over hardness invariably reduces die and punch life during thermal fatigue and same applies for hardness on lower side. In this research work, optimum level of hardness and heat treatment parameters (hot strength, temper resistance, and thermal expansion for hot work die steel) is investigated by varying heat treatment variables for enhanced service life of dies and punches. Moreover, three different heat treatment techniques were adopted to attain an optimum level of microstructure and surface hardness in hot forging punches for hot-work tool steels. Considerable improvements were observed in surface micro-hardness. The choice of selected optimum parameters shows clear signs of improved service life for H13 tool steel during forging.</p> Muhammad Atif Niaz, Dr Adnan Tariq, Touqeer Iqbal, Waqas Javaid ##submission.copyrightStatement## Sat, 17 Aug 2019 19:14:18 +0500 Effect of Investigating the Challenges in the Management of Civil and Oil & Gas Industry Projects by Using Knowledge Management in Projects Fields <p>In this research, the effect of investigating the present challenges in the management of civil and oil and gas industry projects using PMBOK<a href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1"><strong>[1]</strong></a> fields associated with the civil projects of the oil and gas industry was studied. In this order, the analysis of the multi-stage process data was utilized during which the data were provided by employing the collection tools in the statistical sample and these items were the results extracted from the questionnaire which were summarized, encoded, classified and eventually processed in order to establish the basis of various analyses and the relationship among these data. The results obtained from the research implied that there is a significant positive relationship between using the knowledge and management fields of the project and reducing the present challenges in the management of the civil and oil and gas projects. Neglecting the project integration and the other fields of knowledge leads to nonfulfillment of objectives and failure in the projects. Prolongation of time, overrun, an increase in the change of tasks and change of the working range, reduction of quality, an increase in the negative risks and the reduction of the positive risks are identified as some of the present challenges in the projects. Following the investigation of these items, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between 9 fields of the project management knowledge and the project integration management with the most influence from other fields and all process groups in oil and gas. This traditional practice smothers the fire at the cost of damage in terms of electronics equipment and documents located in the vicinity of the fire. To reduce the damage rate, an autonomous firefighting robot is developed that first detects fire with the help of flame sensors, then automatically reach to the fireplace and extinguishes the fire through releasing the cloud of carbon dioxide gas. Moreover, it is capable of sending notification through Short Message Service (SMS) to the concerned person or rescue departments. To get success in e-commerce, retailers must consider the liking and disliking of consumers in their website designs. Because of the easy availability of numerous online shopping websites, consumers are now choosy and selective in using these websites. It is important for retailers to know about consumers’ attitude and behavioral intentions so that they design websites according to the consumers’ requirements and reach their profit objectives. Several types of research have been conducted on the importance of web design artifacts and their effects on customer attitude and behavioral intentions. In this study, the review of four website design attributes i.e., visual design (color, typography), navigation design, content design, and interactive design is presented along with their influence on consumer attitude and behavioral intentions in e-commerce sites. With increasing use of digital communication channels, many speech analysis techniques are being used to identify gender by acoustic features of speaker’s voice. In this paper, an algorithm is presented to develop a tool using Praat Script to classify speaker’s gender by analysing sound features such as pitch, formants, and MFCC coefficients with various speech processing techniques broadly categorized into composite and multi-layer feature approaches. Euclidean distance and Naïve Bayes are implemented to compare cumulative feature vector containing fundamental frequency, formant frequencies, and MFCC coefficients, with base vector of aforementioned sound features that is obtained through supervised training using Texas Instruments and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (IMIT) speech corpus. Techniques are further refined to get more accurate outcome by applying fuzzy logic rule base by aggregating their results. Algorithm is also designed to make it efficient in terms of processing time, accuracy, and reliability by eliminating the frames having undefined F<sub>0</sub> and removing outliers while identifying sound features. Multi-layer feature approach achieves 98% accuracy in gender recognition as compare to composite approach which returns just 77% with sample dataset of 133 Urdu language speakers’ voices, obtained through Pakistani Urdu dramas.</p> Abdul Ghafar, Mr., Nauman Shah, Dr., Muhammad Munwar Iqbal ##submission.copyrightStatement## Tue, 20 Aug 2019 16:15:47 +0500 Integrating IoT with Tactical Considerations towards Improvements in Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) <p>Emergency services contribute a lot for wellbeing and comfort of society by promoting virtues of goodwill gestures. In Pakistan, emergency services took a long time to start in the form of Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) in the year 2004. The PES has put its remarkable efforts to provide quality emergency services which is acknowledged by the community. However, it still needs improvements from different perspectives like inclusion and integration of IoT based apparatus, incorporating emergency medical services (EMS) with e-health systems, integration of call monitoring software and vehicle tracking system, inclusion of technology based decision support system, advancements in operational communication, safety and protection of rescuers during operations, addition of helicopter emergency service etc. The state of the art literature is still deficient to comprehensively cover the topic under reference. The study successfully addresses this deficiency by thoroughly exploring different aspects of the PES in critical constructive way leading towards technological and tactical improvements.
