Effect of Different Column Arrangements on Structural Behavior of Square Overhead Water Tank By Response Spectrum Analysis
Main Article Content
Abstract
Overhead water tanks (OHTs) are important structures of any industrial area and residential society. OHT should remained functional during and after an earthquake or in any other emergency. Several studies had been carried out on failure and damage of overhead water tanks during earthquakes. Many researchers in the field of structural engineering investigated the structural behavior of OHTs in terms of base shear (BS), overturning moment (OM), displacement (D) and time period (T) etc. Some researchers investigated the structural behavior of OHTs by considering different seismic zones, soil profiles, staging elevations, and bracing systems in frame staging. In this study the effect of different column arrangements on structural behavior of square OHT was studied. Considering seismic zone 2A of building codes of Pakistan, response spectrum analysis was performed in terms of BS, T, axial force, and main column moments using SAP2000. The magnitude of BS in column arrangement of option II is higher than option I in both cases with water and without water but the trend is vice versa in case of time period and axial force.
